If a Tutor is Sick

If you are unable to tutor, perhaps due to illness, have a card in a private place showing the names of the parent and child, the contact phone number, the day and time of the lesson. Someone may be able to inform your client in time.

Working With the Parent as a Team Member.

When working one to one with a child, I require the parent to be present and join in with the activities. During the hour lesson there will be several games and ‘hands on’ things to do to reinforce concepts and to keep up the child’s interest level. Good games are important for teaching children with learning difficulties. It is important to involve the parent or carer and enable the game to be played at home as well.

I encourage the parent to learn what to do to practise the skills at home with the child, and also what positive comments to make. This has been necessary at times, because some parents make such negative comments to, and about, their children. I have needed to correct them firmly and model some encouraging language.

Having a parent present may be difficult but necessary. I really feel that teaching parents to help their children to learn is of paramount importance and indeed the most successful tutoring for me has happened as a result. Some teachers fear making mistakes in front of other adults but I try to use any mistakes that I might make to teach the following points. These could be on a card.

Mistakes

      1. Everyone makes mistakes.
      2. Mistakes are OK if you can fix them.
      3. You can learn by your mistakes.
      4. If you can't accept correction, learning will cease and
      5. only God doesn't make mistakes.

The lessons are usually relaxed and enjoyable. Although lately I have noticed that the children are finding it harder to accept correction and this does affect their learning. We have prepared a card, ‘Accepting Correction,’ see page 116, also ‘Its OK to be Wrong,’ see page 117.

A young teacher friend of mine has a ‘grumpy chair’ with a mirror near it for children who sulk when corrected. She says that they even put themselves there if they feel grumpy and return when they feel better.
